Tue 22 Dec 2009:Onehunga’s Rima Strickland and Danny Delany kept the club’s proud record intact last Saturday as they ran out comfortable winners of the Southern Cross Building Society Auckland 242 Mixed Pairs.
They defeated Hillsboro’s Peter Thorne and Pt Chevalier’s Pam Coyle 21-9 in the final at Balmoral. Teams comprising Onehunga members have now won the event for four of the five years it has been held.
Strickland and Delany join Raelene Castle and Mike Kernaghan, Doug and Lisa Parlane and Clive Major as players from Onehunga who have triumphed in the 242 Mixed Pairs event. Castle and former Commonwealth Games singles bronze medallist Kernaghan went on to win the New Zealand Club Championship title last season.
Joe Whitelaw and Wendy Jensen ensured Onehunga would be represented in the final after their 17-12 quarter final victory over Balmoral’s Trevor Foord and Dragica Nikolova. This set up a semi final showdown against Strickland and Delany.
Whitelaw and former Black Jack Jensen raced out to a 6-0 lead in the semi, however only scored on two remaining ends, ending their title aspirations.
On the other side of the draw Peter Thorne was in vintage form. He and partner Pam Coyle accounted for New Zealand under 25 rep Chris Le Lievre and former winner Reen Stratford 19-12 in the quarter final. They then followed up with a 26-9 crushing of club mates Ivan Zonich and Fay Yates.
However Thorne’s run was halted by Strickland and Delany. A big count of five on the 9th end meant Thorne and Coyle were always playing catch up, and as gallant as their effort was in pegging back the margin, it was ultimately to no avail.
The final of the Southern Cross Building Society Auckland Men’s Triples has been postponed for a second time after play failed to get underway at Balmoral on Saturday afternoon.
